Age calculation formula with example
The age formula is a simple subtraction: take the date of birth away from the date you want the age on. Work out the year, month and day separately.
Age = Today's Date − Date of birth
Years = Today's year − Birth year
Months = Today's month − Birth month
Days = Today's day − Birth dayIf the days come out negative, borrow the number of days in the previous month and take 1 off the months. If the months come out negative, add 12 and take 1 off the years.
Example: date of birth 25/11/1998, age on 19/09/2026
- Days: 19 − 25 = −6, which is negative. Borrow the 31 days of August: 19 + 31 − 25 = 25 days. This takes 1 off the months.
- Months: (9 − 1) − 11 = −3, which is negative. Add 12: −3 + 12 = 9 months. This takes 1 off the years.
- Years: (2026 − 1) − 1998 = 27 years.
Age = 27 years, 9 months and 25 days.
How calculate age in hours, minutes and seconds
Formula :
Hours = Days lived × 24
Minutes = Hours × 60
Seconds = Minutes × 60In the same example, 25/11/1998 to 19/09/2026 is 10,160 days. That gives 10,160 × 24 = 243,840 hours, 243,840 × 60 = 14,630,400 minutes and 14,630,400 × 60 = 877,824,000 seconds. The calculator above does this instantly and keeps the seconds ticking.

FAQs
How do I calculate my actual age?
Subtract your birth year from the current year, then take away 1 if your birthday has not come yet this year. For your actual age in years, months and days, subtract your date of birth from today's date, borrowing days or months when a result is negative. Or enter your date of birth in the age calculator above and it does all of this for you.
Example: if you were born on 15 August 2002, then on 21 September 2026 you work out 2026 − 2002 = 24. Your birthday has already passed this year, so you are 24. Month (September) 09 - (August) 08 = 1. Days 21 - 15 = 6. Your exact age is 24 years, 1 month and 6 days.
How to calculate age in DD MM YYYY?
Write both dates in DD MM YYYY order, then subtract the day, month and year one at a time. If the day is negative, borrow the days of the previous month and take 1 off the month. If the month is negative, add 12 and take 1 off the year.
Example: date of birth 28 03 2003, age on 10 02 2026. Days: 10 − 28 = −18, so borrow the 31 days of January: 10 + 31 − 28 = 13. Months: (2 − 1) − 3 = −2, so add 12 to get 10. Years: (2026 − 1) − 2003 = 22. The age is 22 years, 10 months and 13 days.
How do I find the age?
Subtract the date of birth from today's date. In the calculator, type the date of birth, then change "Calculate age on" to the date you need. This helps with school admission, job and exam forms that ask for your age as on a cut-off date.
Example: if a person was born on 10 May 2010, their age as on 1 July 2026 is 16 years, 1 month and 21 days.
How do I calculate my age in hours, minutes and seconds?
Work out how many days you have lived, then multiply by 24 for hours, by 60 again for minutes, and by 60 once more for seconds.
Example: a baby born on 1 January 2000 at 12:00 AM is 366 days old on 1 January 2001, because 2000 was a leap year. That is 366 × 24 = 8,784 hours, 8,784 × 60 = 527,040 minutes and 527,040 × 60 = 31,622,400 seconds. In a normal year of 365 days, the figures are 8,760 hours and 31,536,000 seconds.
How does the calculator handle leap years and 29 February birthdays?
Leap days are counted automatically, because the calculator works with real calendar dates. For a 29 February birthday, it treats 28 February as the birthday in years that are not leap years. Some rules use 1 March instead, so check the requirement if the date matters for a form or legal use.
Example: if you were born on 29 February 2004, your age on 28 February 2026 is 22 years, 0 months and 0 days.
